If you use ‘____phobia’ to refer to systematic oppression you are conflating disability and systematic oppression, and THIS HURTS PEOPLE.

So come up with new terms, please.

EDIT: And I’m not exaggerating about the hurting people thing; this has happened to me. ._. And there’s the whole issue of it strips people with the ability to self-identify because the term is associated with problematic behavior.

This is relevant to my last post. I’m not qualified to come up with a new term for systematic oppression of sex workers, not being a sex worker myself, so I’m going with “shaming of sex workers”.

I’ve been thinking hard about this too, specfically in relation to heterosexism vs. queer/homo/biphobia. The terms mean different things, in my mind; interrelated and overlapping things, yes, but I see the former as being more about the act of upholding systemic oppression and the latter being more about the viscerally bigoted, dehumanizing feelings that help drive it. If that makes sense?

SO YES I’m probably going to start using queer-bigotry - queer-bigoted, homo-bigoted, bi-bigoted - in place of queerphobia, queerphobic/homophobic/biphobic, from now on. (Also, psychophobia -> neurobigotry, for now.) Just a heads up! I don’t want to speak for anybody else or determine their terms for them (I’m queer, but not specifically homosexual OR bisexual so please do let me know if I’m being appropriative even in this realm), but I do want to stop participating in any ableist appropriation of the experience of phobias.

whoa i love it!!

i will probably end up changing psychophobia to psychobigotry just cuz neurobigotry sounds more like neurotypical related bullshit BUT yeah i totally agree wrt the first paragraph

words are hard tumblr

I will follow your lead, re: psychobigotry! For some reason in my head that sounded off, like it sounded like it was directed at people with psychotic-spectrum illnesses rather than general psychiatric ones, but…I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY BRAIN CAME UP WITH THAT since I never got that vibe from ‘psychophobia’ (which is correct, right? I always used psychophobia to mean “ableism specifically against the generally mentally ill”) hahaha so yes

/adopts new more appropriate word!!

Well the part of “neurotypical” which indicates the privilege is the “typical” not the “neuro” …but psychobigotry works just as well.  I think I will have to adopt this approach as well.

The only word I’ve had trouble replacing is islamophobia. At first I thought about using anti-Islam, but then you’ve got bigots whining that being against Islam isn’t the same as being against Muslims, which is bullshit. So until I find something better, or come up with something better, I’ll simply be using anti-Muslim.

I use ‘anti-Muslim bigot’. Since the racialisation of Muslims in certain media outlets ‘racist’ works too.
