This one has been making the atheist blog circuit for quite some time, but always worth the repost.

I don’t like this one bit.

because that’s not why 9/11 happened…
Like my favorite comedian David Cross and credited scholars say:

I don’t think Osama bin Laden sent those planes to attack us because he hated our freedom. I think he did it because of our support for Israel, our ties with the Saudi family and our military bases in Saudi Arabia. You know why I think that? Because that’s what he fucking said! Are we a nation of 6-year-olds? Answer: yes.

Nothing to do with Islam.

Thank you, Regina.
I got into an argument with a friend a while back, who’d retweeted this same saying from a band. I have my issues with religion, don’t get me wrong. I hate that people use religion to negate science and to justify homophobic, racist, cissexist, sexist, etc. behaviors and attitudes. I hate that people use religion to justify withholding rights from people. I think that’s absolutely deplorable.
But I’m beginning to think that the world would have all these problems we have even if religion didn’t exist… Because we use religion as a scapegoat to justify our behavior. And if religion weren’t around, people would simply find something else. My opinion is that it’s because we have shitty people in the world that religion causes problems, not the other way around.

Anybody who thinks fundamentalism is really about religion does not have a good grasp of the psychology and reasons for fundamentalism. I am not talking about just Islamic fundamentalism, but most if not all fundamentalist groups around the world.

Can we reconsider ‘fundamentalist’ and ‘Islam’? Cookie-cutter terms with differing connotations, Thursday does not approve.
